H2 Energy Europe and Stadtwerke Flensburg have inked a historic letter of intent, paving the way for the cross-border transport of green hydrogen between Denmark and Germany.

This strategic partnership aligns with Stadtwerke Flensburg’s ambitious goal of achieving CO2 neutrality by 2035. The collaboration involves key players such as Siemens Energy Global, Gasunie Deutschland, and H2 Energy Europe, collectively contributing to the realization of a sustainable initiative.

Stadtwerke Flensburg’s aspiration to purchase Danish green hydrogen from 2028 signifies a significant step in achieving its long-term goal of CO2 neutrality. The strategic partnership lays the groundwork for a pioneering cross-border hydrogen transport project, utilizing a planned Danish hydrogen pipeline set to extend to Germany by 2028. The project’s objectives align with the broader vision of making industries and transport CO2-neutral while enhancing the overall stability of the electricity grid.

This letter of intent marks a historic milestone for the Danish hydrogen industry. It represents the first agreement between a Danish hydrogen producer and a German end-user, reflecting tangible ambitions to utilize hydrogen as a clean energy source. The collaboration leverages the planned Danish hydrogen pipeline, reinforcing its pivotal role in the emerging Danish Power-to-X (PtX) industry.

Julien Rolland, CEO of H2 Energy Europe, emphasizes the importance of hydrogen’s role in ensuring grid stability. He notes that hydrogen usage in cogeneration plants proves beneficial during periods when renewable energy sources are unavailable. The surplus electricity generated by wind farms and future energy islands can be efficiently converted into hydrogen, offering grid relief during energy production lulls.

The success of the agreement hinges on the realization of a robust Danish hydrogen infrastructure. The declaration underscores the significance of network operators like Gasunie, highlighting the need for a cost-effective hydrogen transport system through pipelines. The envisioned infrastructure is expected to form the backbone of Denmark’s Power-to-X industry, playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of green hydrogen.

Dirk Thole, CEO of Stadtwerke Flensburg, expresses pride in the groundbreaking initiative and optimism about the company’s sustainable future. The strategic plan includes a pilot project for energy production, aiming to introduce the combustion of green hydrogen in the power plant by 2028. This shift not only contributes to climate-neutral electricity and heating production but also marks a transition away from natural gas.

Dansk Industri acknowledges the significance of the declaration of intent, recognizing it as a decisive step for the entire PtX industry. The collaboration symbolizes the beginning of extensive cross-border cooperation on hydrogen between Denmark and Germany. Despite existing uncertainties related to hydrogen infrastructure, stakeholders are optimistic about the transformative potential of this partnership.

In summary, the letter of intent between H2 Energy Europe, Stadtwerke Flensburg, and key partners signals a transformative shift toward sustainable energy practices, exemplifying the potential of hydrogen as a clean and versatile energy carrier.
