DHL Freight has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative, commencing trials of a hydrogen-powered truck developed by Paul Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH, based on the Mercedes-Benz Atego platform.

The year-long pilot program will see the vehicle tested on local distribution routes and e-commerce deliveries in Cologne, marking a significant step forward in the company’s sustainability strategy.

The deployment of hydrogen trucks by DHL Freight aligns with the company’s overarching sustainability objectives, which aim to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. By integrating hydrogen vehicles into its fleet, DHL is striving to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and drive innovation in the logistics sector. The pilot program serves as a crucial testing ground for evaluating the feasibility and performance of hydrogen-powered transportation in real-world scenarios.

The hydrogen trucks, weighing 15.6 tons each, boast impressive features, including an approximate range of 400 km with a trailer and 600 km without. Powered by hydrogen fuel cells, these vehicles offer greater autonomy and faster refueling times compared to traditional battery electric trucks, making them well-suited for long-distance transportation. The adoption of hydrogen propulsion technology represents a significant milestone in DHL’s quest for sustainable logistics solutions.
