Applications are being accepted for projects in “Nuclear Coupled Hydrogen Production and Use” by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

This newly announced funding opportunity amendment seeks to encourage the development of nuclear plant thermal integration that would be necessary for high-temperature hydrogen generation or hydrogen-coupled end applications for nuclear energy. The DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office, in collaboration with the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy Light Water Sustainability Program, released this modification.

The chosen grantees may design and create the heat-extraction infrastructure required for a nuclear and hydrogen industrial energy park or create hydrogen-coupled end applications for nuclear-produced hydrogen, according to expectations. These ground-breaking initiatives might help and eventually lead to a demonstration of the extraction, distribution, and management of thermal energy at thermal power levels between 20 and 300 megawatts thermal. Any demonstration projects are also anticipated to involve the neighborhood communities, meet DOE’s aims for energy justice and the environment, and help underserved areas.

This addendum (Amendment No. 14) to the U.S. Industry Opportunities for Advanced Nuclear Technology Development Funding Opportunity Announcement was released by the DOE Idaho Operations Office. This revision also changes the funding availability table, moves the application deadline from September 14, 2022, to October 11, 2022, and identifies a new area of interest.
