Doosan Enerbility, a South Korean plant builder, intends to acquire ammonia cracking technology that can be applied to hydrogen co-fired power plants.

Using a method called ammonia cracking, ammonia is broken down into hydrogen at very high temperatures.

Doosan Enerbility stated on Thursday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for cooperation in the ammonia cracking industry with Johnson Matthey (JM), a UK-based provider of ammonia cracking solutions.

The signing ceremony was conducted at the Doosan Enerbility headquarters in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, and was attended by Simon Stanbridge, head of JM’s business development section, and Kwang-yeol Lee, head of the turbo-machinery business unit.

As part of the partnership, JM will supply the design technology and catalysts for the ammonia cracking process, and Doosan Enerbility will be in charge of providing the technologies required for the projects, including the manufacturing, construction, and detailed design of the ammonia cracking process.

Additionally, the two businesses intend to work together to develop design technology that will link hydrogen combined cycle power generation with the ammonia cracking process in order to use it in the future for hydrogen co-fired power generation.
