A U.S. energy corporation and the South Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (DSME) have joined forces to explore technology for a massive liquid hydrogen carrier.
The agreement with CB&I, a division of McDermott, a provider of energy engineering and construction solutions, asks for both businesses to work together to develop technology to install sizable liquid hydrogen storage tanks aboard ships and other related locations.
According to DSME, CB&I produced the largest liquid hydrogen storage tank in the world and gave it to the Florida-based Kennedy Space Center.
Since liquid hydrogen is easier to transport and store than gaseous hydrogen, it has gained interest as a new energy source in the era of carbon neutrality.
Since there is predicted to be an increase in demand for liquid hydrogen shipping in the future, DSME anticipated that the business partnership will help increase the size of liquid hydrogen carriers.
