Duferco has unveiled plans to spearhead a clean hydrogen production project in Sicily, aimed at reducing carbon emissions in its plant near Messina.
Collaborating with Caronte and Nippon Gases Italia, Duferco intends to construct a green hydrogen production unit with an initial capacity of approximately 100 tons per year, marking a pivotal milestone in the region’s transition towards eco-friendly manufacturing processes.
The primary objective of Duferco’s clean hydrogen initiative is to mitigate the environmental impact of its steel production operations by embracing renewable energy sources and reducing carbon emissions. By harnessing the power of green hydrogen, the company aims to align with European Union directives on energy transition while fostering regional economic growth and sustainability.
The hydrogen production unit will be powered by a state-of-the-art 4 MW photovoltaic system and equipped with a cutting-edge 1 MW electrolyzer, enabling the efficient conversion of renewable electricity into clean hydrogen. This innovative technology not only ensures environmental compatibility but also enhances energy efficiency, laying the foundation for a more sustainable industrial ecosystem.
With a total investment of €10 million, including significant funding from regional authorities through the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience (PNRR), Duferco’s clean hydrogen project holds the promise of catalyzing economic revitalization and industrial transformation in Sicily. The hydrogen produced will not only benefit Duferco’s operations but also serve as a valuable resource for other industrial enterprises in the region, fostering collaboration and synergy in the pursuit of sustainable development.
