Duferco Energia and Ansaldo Green Tech have entered into a key partnership in the construction of a Hydrogen Valley in Giammoro, Messina.

The cornerstone of this development is a 1 MW electrolyser, supplied by Ansaldo Green Tech, to spearhead green hydrogen production under Europe’s hydrogen economy initiatives. Positioned within the strategic framework of Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, with financing from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU program, this endeavor underscores Italy’s growing role in Europe’s renewable energy scheme.

The electrolyser incorporates Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) technology, lauded for its superior efficiency and adaptability. Once operational, this system is projected to generate over 500 kilograms of high-purity green hydrogen daily. This comes with a notable emphasis on optimized energy consumption, an achievement pertinent for meeting industrial decarbonization targets in Europe. Further elevating its environmental merit, the project includes a 4 MW photovoltaic installation to supply renewable electricity for hydrogen production, aiming for an annual output of approximately 100 tons.

This €10 million investment marks a significant step in Italy’s transition towards sustainable energy while reinforcing the local economy. By producing green hydrogen, the initiative targets the decarbonization of industrial sectors, such as steel, logistics, and transportation, which remain heavily reliant on fossil fuels. The project anticipates creating employment within Sicily, fostering growth in the green technology and hydrogen production spheres.

The Giammoro Hydrogen Valley aligns with the objectives of the European Union’s RePowerEU plan, aimed at minimizing dependency on fossil fuels and expediting renewable energy adoption.
