Construction is underway for the Düsseldorf-Höherweg (HyLight3) project, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards a hydrogen-powered future.

Developed by H2 Mobility Germany, Stadtwerke Düsseldorf, and Rheinbahn, this innovative filling station promises to revolutionize the transportation sector with its capacity to fuel fuel cell-powered buses and trucks, bolstered by locally produced hydrogen.

The primary goal of the HyLight3 project is to establish a robust infrastructure for hydrogen refueling, enabling the widespread adoption of fuel cell-powered vehicles in Düsseldorf and beyond. By investing in cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices, the project aligns with Düsseldorf’s ambitious target of achieving climate neutrality in the transport sector by 2035.

The HyLight3 station represents a leap forward in hydrogen refueling infrastructure, equipped to provide two tonnes of hydrogen per day. With the capability to fuel up to 100 vehicles daily at varying pressures, the station caters to the diverse needs of fuel cell-powered buses and trucks, ensuring efficient and seamless refueling experiences for operators and drivers alike.

Stadtwerke Düsseldorf’s investment in an electrolyzer marks a pivotal step towards localized hydrogen production, slated to commence operations by 2026. By harnessing renewable energy sources, the electrolyzer will generate hydrogen on-site, reducing reliance on external suppliers and minimizing carbon footprint. The subsequent delivery via pipeline ensures a reliable and sustainable supply chain for the HyLight3 station.

The HyLight3 project receives substantial backing from the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), underlining the government’s commitment to fostering innovation in hydrogen and fuel cell technology. With €3 million allocated as part of the National Innovation Programme Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Phase 2 (NIP2), the project gains crucial financial support to propel its development and implementation.
