At the generation facility at So Gonçalo do Amarante, Ceará, EDP Brazil created the first Green Hydrogen (H2V) molecule. As part of the EDP Group’s commitments to the energy transition, the expansion of the facility is crucial for the production of renewable energy in Brazil.

The H2 Pilot Project at the Pecém Thermoelectric Complex (UTE Pecém), whose official launch is scheduled for January 2023, is currently in its initial strategic stage of development. The plant, which cost R$42 million to build, is the first in both the State and the EDP Group.

EDP’s Green Hydrogen plant (Pecém H2V) is a Research & Development project at UTE Pecém that aims to build a roadmap with analysis of scaling scenarios while taking into account all the links in the hydrogen production chain in order to produce clean fuel with a guarantee of renewable origin. It contains a 3 MW solar power plant as well as a 250 Nm3/h gas-producing electrolyser module for fuel production with a guarantee of renewable origin.

The project relied on partnerships with companies like Hytron, a provider of electrolysis, and EDP as project executors, as well as the GESEL group, which assessed scenarios for the scalability of H2 production and determined the project’s viability in terms of the economy, sectors, and markets; IATI, which handled the technical feasibility study; and the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel).

EDP Brasil contributes to the creation of knowledge about the topic through the initiative. Analysis of the gas production chain, commercial models, strategic alliances with industries, and adjustments to mobility using hydrogen gas are the main goals of the project.
