EDP Renewables Canada has successfully acquired land for its first energy storage project in Canada, called Edgeware, in partnership with Caldwell First Nation.

Located in the City of St. Thomas, the 75MWac (300 MWh) Edgeware project marks a significant step in supporting Ontario’s energy needs, boasting a 20-year contract with the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). This project aims to enhance the province’s transmission grid and meet its growing energy demands.

The Edgeware project is being developed on the traditional territory of the Caldwell First Nation, ensuring that the partnership respects the community’s values and sovereign rights. Revenue generated from the project will be reinvested into the community, providing economic benefits and opportunities. The project is targeting commercial operations by 2027, reflecting a commitment to local growth and development.

St. Thomas is experiencing remarkable growth due to the automotive industry’s expansion, and the Edgeware project is anticipated to meet the city’s electricity demand. The initiative will help revitalize the local economy, creating jobs and boosting workforce development. Additionally, the project will yield tax revenues that will fund city services, further embedding the project into the community’s fabric.
