The first phase of the green hydrogen plant in Ain Sokhna is now being commissioned by Egypt Green, a joint venture between Fertiglobe, Scatec, Orascom Construction, and the Sovereign Fund of Egypt.
The partnership plans to reach Final Investment Decision (FID) on the project in 2023 and is now finalizing technical and technological choices for the full-scale plant.
With a one million ton yearly production capacity, Scatec stated in March 2022 that it would build a sizable green ammonia facility in SCZONE’s Ain Sokhna Industrial Zone.
Egypt Green’s principal owner, Scatec, will construct and run the project. Egypt Green will eventually have 100 megawatts (MW) of electrolysers and be the first complete green hydrogen plant in Africa, fueled by 260 MW of solar and wind energy.
The project would provide up to 15,000 tonnes of green hydrogen as feedstock for Fertiglobe’s ammonia reactors, which could produce up to 90,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually.
