EKPO Fuel Cell Technologies, a joint venture between ElringKlinger and Plastic Omnium, has announced a significant order for the supply of fuel cells stacks to be used in a cruise ship’s propulsion system.

This groundbreaking development has the potential to usher in a new era of sustainable and eco-friendly marine transportation.

Innovative Marine Propulsion Technology

The order, received from an undisclosed international cruise company, involves the delivery of NM12 single fuel cell stacks for an initial cruise ship operated by a global shipping firm. This contract is initially worth a single-digit million euro sum, and the delivery of the stacks commenced in Q1 2023.

EKPO’s NM12 Single PEMFC stack module is an innovative piece of technology containing 359 cells and can produce an output of up to 123 kW at 2.5 bar operating pressure. This impressive output makes it an ideal solution for powering large marine vessels like cruise ships.

A Green Wave for the Marine Industry

The adoption of EKPO’s fuel cell stacks by a major player in the cruise ship industry is a significant milestone. Not only does it demonstrate the versatility and broad applicability of EKPO’s technology, but it also signifies a substantial stride towards greener and more sustainable marine transportation.

“The agreement has tremendous potential for the future and confirms our commitment to helping shape the development of sustainable and eco-friendly shipping with our fuel cell stacks,” said Dr. Gernot Stellberger, Managing Director of EKPO Fuel Cell Technologies.

Dr. Stellberger further added, “The order clearly illustrates that our fuel cell stacks are suitable for a wide range of applications – on the road in buses, commercial vehicles, and passenger cars, and beyond the road in industrial settings, on railways and especially for maritime usage.”

A Pioneering History

EKPO Fuel Cell Technologies is no stranger to marine propulsion systems. In August last year, Watertaxi Rotterdam launched its first hydrogen boat powered by EKPO’s fuel cell technology, signaling the company’s foray into marine applications.

As EKPO continues to innovate and supply fuel cell technology to various sectors, the positive implications for sustainable transportation are immense. From cruise ships to water taxis, EKPO’s fuel cell technology is paving the way for a cleaner, greener future in marine travel.
