Elcogen’s Solid Oxide Electrolyser Paves the Way for Green Hydrogen

Estonian technology company Elcogen has emerged with a groundbreaking solution – the solid oxide electrolyser.

This innovative technology holds the promise of addressing the challenges associated with the ramp-up and shut-down rates, a critical aspect in adapting to the dynamic nature of renewable energy sources.

To validate the capabilities of its solid oxide electrolyser, Elcogen partnered with Convion to conduct a comprehensive test focused on ramp-up and shut-down rates. According to Matti Nopenen, Head of R&D at Elcogen, the test involved hundreds of cycles with ramp rates from hot idle to 100% load in less than 10 minutes. This rapid change rate positions the technology to seamlessly adapt to fluctuations in wind profiles and other renewable energy variations.

As of January 2, Elcogen reported that its field test with Convion had run for an impressive 2,000 hours. The collaboration integrated Convion’s solid oxide electrolyser with Elcogen’s cutting-edge cell technology. The key highlight of this field test was the exceptional electrical efficiency achieved, surpassing 85%. Remarkably, the solid oxide electrolyser demonstrated a significant reduction in electricity consumption – a notable 20-30% less compared to traditional PEM and alkaline electrolysers.

Nopenen emphasized that the solid oxide electrolyser operates at a much higher temperature than PEM and alkaline counterparts. This elevated operating temperature enables the solid oxide stack to produce hydrogen at an efficiency range of 95-100%, measured in lower heating value (LHV). This efficiency milestone positions Elcogen’s technology as a frontrunner in the race to optimize hydrogen production methods.

The implications of Elcogen’s solid oxide electrolyser extend beyond efficiency gains. With the technology showcasing a remarkable ability to follow rapid changes in renewable energy profiles, it establishes itself as a key player in the quest for green hydrogen production. The reduction in electricity consumption further underscores the environmental benefits, aligning with the global push for sustainable and eco-friendly energy solutions.
