Enbridge, a Canadian energy infrastructure business, has invested USD 6.6 million (EUR 6.1 million) in Smartpipe Technologies, a startup that has developed new pipeline technology that enhances safety and allows for hydrogen transit.

Smartpipe, located in Houston, Texas, has created a patented system that involves pulling a composite internal pipeline liner through an existing pipeline to increase structural integrity and allow for better monitoring. The technology enables hydrogen and carbon dioxide (CO2) energy infrastructure needed in the energy transition, in addition to enhancing safety and dependability through its non-metallic architecture.

The solution uses a trenchless installation approach, making it ideal for replacing aging steel pipelines in difficult-to-reach places.

“This is a very exciting technology that can improve the safety of existing pipelines while also supporting the transportation of low carbon energy sources like hydrogen, demonstrating how our assets can be a bridge to a cleaner energy future,” said Caitlin Tessin, Vice President of Strategy and Market Innovation at Enbridge.
