ENEOS is making a substantial investment in green hydrogen production in Queensland, targeting a significant boost in renewable energy initiatives.
Set to begin in 2026, ENEOS will invest $200 million in a demonstration plant on Bulwer Island, aiming to produce up to 680 kilograms of green hydrogen daily. This project is expected to generate over 100 jobs from its start to completion, offering substantial employment opportunities in a burgeoning field.
The hydrogen produced will be in the form of methylcyclohexane (MCH), a liquid hydrogen carrier that is easily stored and transported. The production plant, spanning around 6,000 square meters, will be located at the former BP refinery site near the Port of Brisbane. The facility will begin construction next year, and MCH production is slated for the following year, with a two-year demonstration period employing over 100 people.
ENEOS is collaborating with several Japanese and Brisbane-based companies to bring this project to fruition, including Chiyoda Corporation and Sumitomo Electric Industries. The initiative, backed by Japan’s Green Innovation Fund, is part of a broader strategy to help the country reach carbon neutrality by 2050, supported by NEDO and the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.
