This plan is part of the Group’s goal to become carbon free by the year 2050.
ENGIE presented its ambitious transformation plan for its operations in Chile at the Presidential Palace of Chile, which involves the construction of 2 GW of renewable energy capacity and the phase-out of coal-fired power generation by 2025. (nearly 1.5 GW).
Following a virtual meeting between Chilean President Sebastian Piera and ENGIE CEO Catherine MacGregor, the Group reaffirmed its pledge to close six coal-fired power plants (0.8 GW), two of which were already closed in 2019, and convert the three newest units (0.7 GW) to gas or biomass by 2025.
In addition, ENGIE announced the creation of a 2 GW renewable energy portfolio in Chile, an increase of 1 GW since the previous announcement in 2019. 0.6 GW is currently under construction.
By 2025, the entire venture would have costed EUR 1.5 billion. By 2026, ENGIE will be able to reduce CO2 emissions from its energy production activities in Chile by 80%.
ENGIE has reaffirmed its commitment to developing green hydrogen production in line with the country’s decarbonization strategy. The Group in Chile, a leader in hydrogen production, is the only company in the world to have built three pilot projects: HyEx, in partnership with Enaex, to produce green ammonia; Hydra, to encourage truck mobility in the mining sector; and a Walmart initiative involving the use of 149 cranes powered by green hydrogen.
