One of the two hydrogen facilities that will be constructed in the UK will include the Vertex Hydrogen project by Essar Energy Transition.

At Essar’s Stanlow refinery complex in the UK, Vertex Hydrogen, a joint venture between Essar group and UK’s Progressive Energy, is developing a hydrogen producing plant. By 2026, the joint venture, in which Essar Oil UK owns 90%, will be able to produce 1 GW of hydrogen annually from two units.

The statement comes after the UK government’s pledge to fund early carbon capture, use, and storage (CCUS) deployment up to 20 billion pounds in order to assist it meet its climate obligations. Essar recently announced the creation of Essar Energy Transition (EET), which will invest USD 3.6 billion over the course of the next five years in the development of a number of low-carbon energy transition projects, of which USD 2.4 billion will be invested at the Stanlow site in Ellesmere Port, located halfway between Liverpool and Manchester.

Vertex Hydrogen, one of the UK’s top low-carbon hydrogen enterprises, will start producing 350 MW of hydrogen as part of this plan starting in 2026. HyNet’s carbon-capture infrastructure will be used to capture and store about 600 000 tonnes of CO2, which is the equivalent of removing about 2,50,000 automobiles from the road.

Vertex is also making quick work on a second plant (HPP2) with a 700 MW capacity (FEED). By the time this is finished in 2023, Vertex will be able to support a larger hydrogen economy in the northwest. The Net Zero Hydrogen Fund has now provided assistance to the HPP2 plant as part of its development.
