The EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, highlighted the enormous potential for renewable energies in southern nations on the sidelines of the UN climate conference in Sharm El-Sheikh.
“This is a fantastic chance for the South Asian nations. because they have an abundance of hydropower, wind, and other renewable energy sources. And now is the time to make infrastructure investments in them with the Global South, according to von der Leyen.
“I will finalize three agreements for green hydrogen here at this COP27, including with Namibia and Egypt,” Von der Leyen said, referring to green hydrogen as the “energy of the future.” According to Von der Leyen, this is a component of the EU investment initiative “Global Gateway,” which has a 300 billion euro budget. Von der Leyen responded that all nations needed to “work even harder” in order for the so-called 1.5-degree target to still be “possible.” The current period in terms of climate protection, according to Von der Leyen, is a “particularly significant era,” she continued, “because we want to stop our dependency on fossil resources from Russia, including gas, coal, and oil. Now it’s crucial that we avoid using gas, coal, or oil from other providers again. We would then imprison ourselves within the negative energy.
