Taiwanese Evergreen has partnered with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) to explore the production and utilization of hydrogen-based marine fuels. This collaboration signals a significant step towards a greener maritime industry.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Evergreen and CIP’s Energy Transition Fund outlines a multi-faceted cooperation, including the production of e-fuels in Taiwan utilizing offshore wind energy and investigating a broader supply of green fuels like e-ammonia and e-methanol.
Taiwan’s favorable offshore wind conditions and growing government support for decarbonization make it an ideal location for producing these future fuel types. CIP’s expertise in developing and constructing offshore wind farms in Taiwan further strengthens this partnership.
Felix Pahl, CIP Partner, highlights the significance of this collaboration, stating that CIP’s strong presence in Taiwan and its commitment to advanced energy technologies align with Evergreen’s ambition to support Taiwan’s net-zero goals.
Evergreen views this partnership as a crucial step towards achieving its carbon reduction targets, aligning with the International Maritime Organization’s net-zero carbon emissions goal by 2050.
Earlier this year, Evergreen demonstrated its commitment to sustainable shipping by ordering 24 methanol dual-fuel containerships, a testament to its ongoing efforts towards a greener maritime future.
This collaboration between Evergreen and CIP underscores the growing momentum towards decarbonizing the maritime industry and highlights Taiwan’s potential as a hub for green fuel production.
