As part of a state-funded fuel cell research project, Faurecia, a FORVIA subsidiary, will provide MAN’s Bavarianflotte (Bavarian fleet) heavy-duty truck fleet with complete hydrogen storage systems.

In this project, Faurecia will develop and seek certification for a new size of tank perfectly adapted to meet the requirements of heavy-duty vehicles and other applications with intensive use cases, backed by about 7 million euros in funding from the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy. Because of its size and ability to store more hydrogen, an extra-large system like this one can travel farther between fill-ups. Augsburg’s R&D center will create a working prototype of this hydrogen storage system (Germany).

Between Nuremberg and Munich in Bavaria, five selected customers will test these hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks beginning in mid-2024 for a year. The Bavarian government, which has set major goals to decarbonize industry and transportation, has a very favorable hydrogen ecosystem and strong support in Bavaria. With heavy-duty mobility, the Bavarian state has a clear goal in mind: promoting hydrogen technology research, development, and application.
