The Antofagasta Bolivia Railway (FCAB) has marked a milestone in sustainable transportation by unveiling South America’s first hydrogen-powered locomotive.

This development underscores FCAB’s dedication to the energy transition and its efforts to combat climate change. Initially, the locomotive will facilitate internal operations between Antofagasta city and its port, playing a crucial role in reducing regional greenhouse gas emissions.

Designed by CRRC Qishuyan Company, the hydrogen locomotive aligns with FCAB’s operational needs. It boasts a power output of 1,000 kilowatts and is equipped with a 35 MPa hydrogen storage system and a large-capacity battery. With a design that is approximately 30 tons lighter than traditional locomotives, it achieves enhanced energy efficiency.

This venture represents a significant leap in rail transport technology and supports local innovation. FCAB has secured a supply of green hydrogen for 2024 and is finalizing the necessary infrastructure to support the locomotive’s operational needs.

The introduction of FCAB’s hydrogen locomotive is an emblem of technological progress and a notable step in embracing cleaner energy solutions. Iván Arriagada, Executive Chairman of Antofagasta, acknowledges that this initiative aligns with the group’s commitment to decarbonize transport and lower carbon emissions. Utilizing green hydrogen, which releases only water vapor and hot air, marks a significant shift from diesel and other fossil fuels.
