FDE, an independent multi-energy producer with a negative carbon footprint, has been chosen by the Walloon government to lead the HECO2-PLASMALYSE HYBRIDE consortium.
The consortium aims to promote the use of carbon-free hydrogen in the region’s energy mix by 2050. This groundbreaking project involves transforming various methane sources into clean hydrogen and solid carbon materials using Hybrid Plasmalysis technology. The initiative aligns with the European Union’s climate neutrality goals and FDE’s commitment to sustainable development in the Greater Region.
The HECO2 project focuses on constructing a clean hydrogen production pilot plant using Hybrid Plasmalysis technology. This innovative technology, developed by the consortium, converts methane from diverse sources into clean hydrogen and solid carbon forms without releasing CO2 emissions. By harnessing this patented process, the consortium aims to achieve a significant reduction in direct CO2 emissions and pave the way for a more sustainable energy future.
The HECO2-PLASMALYSE HYBRIDE consortium comprises prominent Belgian and international industrial and research players, including FDE’s subsidiary Gazonor Benelux, AGC Glass Europe, GATE2, EDF Luminus, Vanheede Environment Group, the Polytechnic University of Mons (UMONS), and the Materia Nova research center. The ultimate goal of the project is to construct a plant capable of producing 15,000 tons of hydrogen and 45,000 tons of carbon materials while significantly reducing CO2 emissions.
In addition to clean hydrogen production, the project aims to explore the use of different local methane sources in Wallonia, such as biomethane and mine gas. This investigation will contribute to enhancing the region’s understanding of solid carbon produced through the Hybrid Plasmalysis process. The project seeks to qualify the qualities of the carbon materials generated, further expanding its potential applications.
The Walloon government’s decision to support the carbon-free hydrogen project marks a significant milestone in the region’s energy transition.
