Redexis has received administrative and execution authorization from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge to install a green hydrogen injection system next to one of its main transport pipelines, specifically the one in San Juan-Cas Tresorer-Son Reus on the island of Mallorca. The business disclosed.
That it is the first renewable hydrogen injection installation authorized in the Spanish gas system and will allow injecting this vector into the natural gas network that supplies the entire island of Mallorca, which is composed in turn of more than 160 kilometers of gas pipelines and 1,150 kilometers of distribution networks, the group indicated that this project is “a historic milestone for the sector.”
In more precise terms, the facility has the ability to inject up to 2% of hydrogen, or 575 tons annually. Additionally, because it is green hydrogen, it will result in a reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the Lloseta plant’s production capacity, which will initially be 300 tons per year, of up to 21,000 tons annually.
The project’s important component is the combination of green hydrogen and natural gas because it is not only the first installation of this kind to be carried out in Spain but also, by capacity, one of the largest in Europe.
Redexis will carry it out using an innovative and cutting-edge method based on gas mixing through a static mixing system that permits indirect dilution of hydrogen and natural gas streams.
The Balearic Government’s General Directorate of Energy and Climate Change is now reviewing the hydrogen pipeline that will supply this injection system, and its approval is anticipated soon. Once approved, the building will start, and green hydrogen will be injected into Mallorca’s natural gas networks. This is a crucial step toward creating a society with no emissions (NetZero).
The installation “is in line with the company’s decarbonization ambitions and will bring this emission-free energy vector closer to segments like home and industrial in the immediate future,” according to Diego Sánchez Muslera, director of Engineering, Offers, and Execution at Redexis.
The European Green Hysland Subsidy Project, which involves more than 30 organizations, businesses, and technological hubs, including Enagás, Acciona Energa, and Cemex, includes this infrastructure.
In order to make Mallorca’s renewable hydrogen ecosystem a reality in the years 2021–2025, the European Union has committed 10 million euros through the Clean Hydrogen Partnership. This ecosystem combines all the key components of the hydrogen value chain through production, transport, and distribution infrastructure, as well as the final use of renewable hydrogen.
