NTPC REL, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC, has signed an agreement with the Union Territory of Ladakh to establish the country’s first green Hydrogen Mobility project in the region.

The signing of the MoU was also commemorated by the unveiling of NTPC’s first solar projects in Leh, which included solar trees and a solar vehicle dock.

The MoU was signed in the august presence of Hon’ble Lt. Governor R K Mathur, top government dignitaries, NTPC officials, and public representatives. The agreement will allow NTPC to assist Ladakh in developing a carbon-free economy based on renewable energy and green hydrogen. This is also consistent with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s objective of a “carbon neutral” Ladakh. Hon’ble LG stated that he wants Ladakh to become a hydrogen state and is eager to work with NTPC to attain this long-term aim.

To begin, NTPC intends to operate 5 hydrogen buses in the region, and the corporation will build a solar plant and a green hydrogen producing unit in Leh to that aim. As a result, Leh will be the first city in the country to undertake a green hydrogen-powered mobility scheme. This would be truly zero-emission mobility.

NTPC has been aggressively pushing for the greening of its portfolio, and the green hydrogen project is yet another step toward attaining a low carbon footprint. NTPC has also promoted the use of green hydrogen-based solutions in industries such as mobility, energy, chemical, fertilizer, and steel.

NTPC recently raised its objective of 60GW renewable capacity by 2032, nearly double the previous target. NTPC just completed India’s largest floating solar installation of 10MW in Vishakhapatnam.
