Tsuneishi and CMB unveiled the world’s first hydrogen-powered ferry, the HydroBingo.

HydroBingo was developed as a result of a joint venture between the two firms, JPNH2YDRO.

The HydroBingo is the world’s first commercially available 80-passenger ferry powered by two hydrogen diesel combustion engines. This hydrogen-powered ferry is an eco-friendly vessel that emits much less CO2 and other hazardous emissions. CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 50% in comparison to a normal diesel engine.

“Thanks to this strong collaboration, we have been able to build this unique vessel. It is the result of the joining of forces of two families and companies with a long history in Japan and Europe. CMB and Tsuneishi will continue to invest in hydrogen applications for the maritime and land-based industries. This is only the beginning of a very exciting journey towards zero carbon shipping,” said Alexander Saverys – CEO CMB.

At the stern of the HydroBingo is a transportable hydrogen trailer designed to deliver hydrogen to the engine via a special double walled conduit. The trailer can be simply emptied and transported to a refueling station via a ramp. Additionally, she features various hydrogen-related applications that represent the ship’s dual-fuel design in accordance with the IGF Code and the “Safety Guidelines for Hydrogen Fueled and Fuel Cell Ships” developed on the basis of hydrogen fuel specialty. Additionally, the Japan Craft Inspection Organization has approved this vessel for inspection (JCI).
