A fruitful bid for government funding results in a £10 million boost to launch a fleet of hydrogen-powered buses across Sussex, Surrey, and Kent.
This support from the Department for Transport, combined with a substantial sum from Metrobus and other partners, pushes the total project financing over £24 million.
Leading this transformative project is West Sussex County Council. Joy Dennis, the council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, confidently highlights the region’s successful funding bid. The initiative is set to roll out 43 new hydrogen-powered buses across various counties. The new fleet of buses will serve an expansive area within Sussex, Surrey, and Kent, connecting smaller rural areas to larger towns and the buzz of London Gatwick. Designed to enhance convenience and connectivity, these routes will include destinations like Burgess Hill, Crawley, Horsham, Worthing, Brighton and several others.
