Fortescue Starts Works on Green Hydrogen Plant in Gladstone

Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) has inaugurated civil construction activity at its 50-megawatt (MW) electrolyzer plant in Gladstone, Queensland. The plant will become Australia’s first large-scale electrolyzer production facility and will be a significant step toward advancing green hydrogen in the country.

Groundbreaking Technology

The electrolyzer facility will be known as the Global Green Energy Manufacturing Centre (GEM C) and is being developed in partnership with the Queensland Government. Once completed, the project is expected to produce up to 2 gigawatts (GW) of electrolyzers annually. Electrolyzers are key in the generation of green hydrogen by separating water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable energy sources.

Economic and Environmental Benefits

Once fully commissioned, the 50 MW plant in Gladstone is projected to create more than 100 construction jobs and approximately 50 operational roles. The project aims to boost local employment and position Australia as a leader in green hydrogen production. Moreover, it is designed to enhance the capability of renewable energy technologies and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, supporting economic growth and environmental sustainability.

Support from Authorities

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk strongly supported the project, highlighting its potential to transform Queensland into a global hub for renewable energy manufacturing. She emphasized the government’s commitment to advancing the hydrogen industry and reducing carbon emissions, aligning with Australia’s broader climate goals.
