Fortum plans to construct a hydrogen production pilot plant in Loviisa, marking a significant stride towards sustainable energy solutions.

The hydrogen production pilot plant, slated for construction in the Källa area near Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear power plant, is poised to commence operations by late 2025. Utilizing electrolysers, the plant will leverage electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, boasting a capacity of approximately two megawatts sourced from the main grid and local household water in Loviisa. Notably, a filling station will accompany the plant to facilitate hydrogen delivery to industrial clientele.

Fortum’s commitment to research and development is underscored by the sole funding of the Kalla test center, with an estimated investment of EUR 17 million. The project’s design is predominantly undertaken by in-house designers, reflecting Fortum’s strategic approach to exploring hydrogen through small-scale projects in the Nordics.

Satu Sipola, Fortum’s vice president of Power-to-X, highlights the pivotal role of the pilot project in gauging the viability of larger-scale hydrogen plants and identifying business opportunities within the hydrogen market. Furthermore, Fortum’s collaborative endeavors with various industries underscore its commitment to driving decarbonization efforts and fostering a sustainable energy ecosystem.

Hydrogen, produced through clean electricity, presents a promising alternative to fossil fuels across diverse industrial sectors, including steel and fertilizer manufacturing. Its versatility as an energy carrier and sustainable fuel holds immense potential in mitigating carbon emissions and fostering a transition towards greener energy solutions.

Fortum’s robust presence in clean energy production positions it as a key player in driving the development of clean hydrogen in the Nordic region. Through active research collaborations with stakeholders across multiple industries, Fortum is spearheading efforts to accelerate the adoption of clean energy solutions and facilitate the decarbonization of industrial operations.
