France Issues Tender for Hydrogen-Powered Articulated Buses for Belfort Urban Transport Network

The Territoire de Belfort in France has issued a tender titled “Acquisition of Eight Hydrogen Articulated Buses for the Urban Public Transport Network.”

The tender was published on August 8, 2024, with a submission deadline set for September 18, 2024. This initiative is significant for the hydrogen industry as it underscores the increasing shift towards greener and more sustainable urban transportation solutions.

The primary objective of this tender is the procurement of eight environmentally friendly, hydrogen-powered articulated buses to enhance the public transport offerings in Belfort. This move not only aligns with national and European goals for reducing carbon emissions but also aims to modernize the region’s public transit system, making it more efficient and sustainable.

Key requirements outlined in the tender include:

– Hydrogen Fuel Technology: The buses must utilize hydrogen fuel cells, ensuring zero emissions during operation. This technology is crucial for reducing pollution and aligning with stringent environmental regulations.
– Vehicle Capacity: The articulated buses are expected to have a high passenger capacity to accommodate increased ridership, which will improve urban mobility and reduce congestion.
– Operational Range: The buses should have a sufficient driving range on a single hydrogen refuel to ensure seamless operation throughout the day without frequent refueling.
– Safety and Reliability: The tender emphasizes stringent safety standards and reliable performance, which are paramount for the everyday functioning of urban public transport.
– Cost-Effectiveness: While prioritizing green technology, the cost of acquisition and long-term operational efficiency are also key considerations.

Hydrogen-powered buses offer distinct advantages, including quick refueling times compared to electric buses and a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. These benefits support France’s broader goals for energy transition and carbon neutrality by 2050.
