Master planning for Eyre hydrogen project

Iron Road’s multi-purpose, multi-user deep-sea port for iron, grain, green hydrogen, and ammonia export at Cape Hardy on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula is in preliminary master planning.

The Central Eyre Iron Project (CEIP) will use high-grade concentrate to power a “green pellet” facility.

Green pellets feeding direct reduced iron ore products can cut steelmaking emissions. Amp Energy plans a 5GW green hydrogen and ammonia generating complex on 410 hectares near Cape Hardy.

Basic raw material requirements like desalinated water drive mass balance output for major product streams like green hydrogen. The SA Northern Water Supply Project, a desalination project, is considering Cape Hardy. The project, which would reduce the region’s dependency on River Murray water, has yet to be chosen.


CPKC orders fuel cells from Ballard Power Systems

CPKC ordered fuel cell engines from Ballard Power Systems. In 2023, CPKC will receive eighteen 200 kW fuel cell engines (3.6 MW total) to expand its Hydrogen Locomotive Program.

Ballard has supplied CPKC with 20 4MW fuel cell engines for three locomotive types during the past two years. In 2022 and 2023, Ballard’s hydrogen fuel cell technology was successfully tested in locomotives.

Range across temperature ranges, heavy hauling, fine-tuning auxiliary load to reduce waste, and increasing hours on present and additional units will assist technical evolution. These experiments and CPKC’s emissions goals have expanded the hydrogen locomotive program.


First hydrogen-powered coach boat launches sailing community toward greener future

Watersportverbond will debut its first emission-free, hydrogen-powered coach boat, the H2C Boat, at the 2023 World Sailing Championships in The Hague, Netherlands.

The boat, developed by Dutch start-up H2 Marine Solutions and outfitted with Torqeedo’s Deep Blue electric motor, symbolizes a partnership of innovative enterprises, according to Torqeedo.

Torqeedo supplied the Deep Blue 50R outboard motor, Deep Blue 40 lithium-ion battery, and energy management system from the start.

The H2C Boat uses a hydrogen fuel cell to extend its range to five hours on the water, powered by the 40 kWh Deep Blue battery and 51 kWh hydrogen capacity. Torqeedo added that the six-meter vessel, which can achieve 45 km/h, is a silent and emissions-free alternative to coach boats, making it suitable for athletes during training and tournaments.


Wales & West Utilities visits hydrogen production site in South Wales

South Wales is home to a cutting-edge hydrogen production facility, which Wales & West Utilities has visited. The business, which manages the gas distribution system in South West England and Wales, paid the visit to determine what changes would be necessary to the system in order to reach the government’s Net Zero targets.

The Wales & West Utilities executive team had the chance to take senior members on a tour of the Protium facility at Baglan Energy Park, Port Talbot, to observe the hydrogen production process in action. The production of green hydrogen at the Pioneer One site was started earlier this year by the green hydrogen business Protium along with partners Fuel Cell Systems Ltd, Enapter, and the University of South Wales.

An important step in creating a network of hydrogen-generating facilities for the UK’s green hydrogen infrastructure was the commissioning of the Pioneer One site. It is home to the largest integrated electrolyser in the UK, a crucial piece of equipment used to convert renewable electricity into low-emission hydrogen.
