Fugro has been awarded a marine site characterization contract by Energinet for the Danish Energy Island project in the North Sea.

The deal is part of Energinet’s preliminary studies for the world’s first ‘hub and spoke’ energy scheme: a renewable island 80 kilometers off the Danish coast that will serve as a transmitting hub for hundreds of nearby wind turbines.

Fugro will conduct geophysical and unexploded ordnance (UXO) magnetometry surveys, which will be used to create an advanced geological and geotechnical soil model for wind farm developers to base potential tenders on.

The fieldwork will take place from May to November 2021, with resumption in February and March 2022. It will be divided into two phases: The geophysical surveys, including seabed sampling and soil data down to at least 100 meters below the seabed, will be delivered in Phase 1; the UXO magnetometry survey, using Fugro’s dedicated Geowing approach, will be delivered in Phase 2. The collected Geo-data would be used by Fugro’s specialist survey and offshore wind consulting teams to provide an accurate derisked site interpretation.

“The geophysical studies have to cover a very large area, and it’s important that they meet the time schedule. We are therefore pleased that an experienced and professional company such as Fugro will be performing the surveys in the North Sea.”

Poul-Jacob Vilhelmsen, project manager for Energinet.

“This latest award from Energinet underlines our commitment to supporting the offshore wind industry in the global energy transition and shows that quality and technical innovation wins contracts. Our innovative ultra high resolution subsoil Geo-data solutions will help future wind farm owners derisk the development and deliver cost-effective green energy to up to 10 million European households.”
