In a strategic partnership, Garrett Motion and BMW Group are poised to reshape the future of zero-emission transportation through an innovative fuel cell compressor. Garrett’s groundbreaking technology will power the new BMW iX5 Hydrogen, further cementing BMW’s commitment to clean mobility.

The collaboration between Garrett Motion Inc., a pioneering technology leader in the automotive industry, and BMW Group focuses on advancing the development of zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. At the heart of this partnership is Garrett’s electric fuel cell compressor (FCC), a product of extensive research and development by Garrett’s team. The compressor will be utilized in the second generation of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, which is set for a small series pilot.

The significance of this collaboration lies in Garrett’s four-year endeavor to create an advanced hydrogen fuel cell compressor tailored specifically to BMW’s requirements. The culmination of this effort will be a comprehensive on-road trial scheduled for later this year. By working closely with BMW Group, Garrett not only reinforces its commitment to clean mobility but also demonstrates its ongoing investment in technological innovation.

The electric air compressor developed by Garrett plays a crucial role in the fuel cell system of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, enabling efficient energy production. Garrett’s high-performance compressor optimizes air flow and pressure, resulting in increased power density and output from the fuel cell system. This enhancement improves the efficiency and longevity of the fuel cell stack. Additionally, the new turbine expander designed for this application significantly reduces electricity consumption for air compression compared to conventional fuel cell compressors.

Garrett’s groundbreaking fuel cell compressor technology sets a new industry standard in the automotive sector. Rigorously tested against extreme temperature, humidity, and vibration levels, this cutting-edge technology underscores BMW Group’s commitment to reliable and clean mobility. Leveraging its expertise in turbo aerodynamics, Garrett has developed high-performance electric fuel cell compressors capable of operating beyond the standard industry speed of 150,000 rpm. These compressors can be configured to fit various hydrogen-powered electric powertrains, offering unmatched efficiency, performance, and versatility. Having launched its first-generation product in 2016, Garrett continues to lead the industry’s push toward a hydrogen-fueled future.
