According to a government paper seen by Reuters on Thursday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government has reached an agreement with the aviation industry and regional authorities on a roadmap for the production and use of “green” aviation fuel.
From 2030, the target is to use at least 200,000 tonnes of synthetic fuel each year, which is roughly one-third of the existing fuel requirements of German air traffic.
The aim is to create synthetic “Power to Liquid” (PtL) kerosene from renewable energy sources, hydrogen, and CO2.
The ministries of transportation and the environment will focus on ways to increase fuel production on a large scale.
A legally binding minimum fuel quota and a purchasing duty are intended to ensure that demand is generated despite higher costs.
Government and industry leaders, as well as fuel producers, are expected to sign the plan on Friday.
