In a significant development towards addressing climate change and reducing emissions, Germany’s climate envoy, Jennifer Morgan, has emphasized the strong collaboration between Riyadh and Berlin in producing and exporting green hydrogen. This partnership holds great importance for green initiatives within both countries and on a global scale.
Morgan discussed her conversations with Saudi authorities regarding climate change and the joint efforts between Germany and Saudi Arabia. The discussions focused on various climate-related issues and strategies to enhance cooperation in environmental domains, including carbon capture, utilization, recycling, and storage as part of a circular carbon economy.
Morgan specifically highlighted the significance of hosting the 2023 United Nations Climate Conference (COP 28) in the region, emphasizing the potential for collaboration and the positive impact on fulfilling the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Speaking at a panel organized by the German Embassy in Riyadh, Morgan stated that her visit aimed to advance partnerships and collaboration in international, Saudi, and German programs focused on accelerating the development of renewable energy and gradually phasing out traditional energy sources. The goal is to establish climate partnerships that drive climate action and seek innovative solutions to address the challenges posed by the climate crisis.
As a former leader of Greenpeace International, Morgan affirmed that the collaboration with Riyadh would contribute to international efforts in environmental and climate change domains. This collaboration is crucial for tackling climate and biodiversity crises and achieving gradual emissions reduction.
Germany is actively working on multiple fronts to make progress in environmental protection and combat the climate crisis both within Europe and worldwide. This aligns with the global energy transition and the promotion of climate justice.
Morgan emphasized that the international response to the climate transition would strengthen the growth of the hydrogen economy, creating employment opportunities and economic prospects. The collaboration between Riyadh and Berlin aims to foster robust cooperation in the energy sector, particularly in the production and exportation of green hydrogen, while simultaneously reducing emissions.
Furthermore, the deepening bilateral cooperation extends to supporting Saudi Arabia’s Green Initiative and the Green Middle East Initiative, demonstrating a shared commitment to sustainable development and environmental preservation.
