In an effort to boost the continent’s ability for research into renewable energy and green hydrogen, Germany is “further extending” its relationship with Africa in the fields of energy and climate.

At the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) and the Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management’s 10th anniversary celebration in Berlin, the announcement was made (SASSCAL).

Federal Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger signed a joint declaration of intent to develop the centers and create a strategic hydrogen collaboration in the presence of nine African ministers.

Strategic German-African energy cooperation on green hydrogen are increasingly using SASSCAL and WASCAL as platforms. The “Green Hydrogen Africa” potential atlas, which was developed with the help of the climate competence centers and received funding from the BMBF, served as the catalyst for this. In 2012, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) of Germany and affiliated African nations established SASSCAL and WASCAL.

In order to develop creative solutions and carry out initiatives that lessen the effects of climate change on communities in Southern and West Africa, the two institutions have worked together with a number of partners, particularly with the technical and financial support of the German government.

These initiatives have focused on advancing renewable energy sources, implementing sustainable agriculture methods, and safeguarding regional ecosystems.
