Gold Hydrogen has achieved a milestone with the spudding of the Ramsay 2 well, a crucial component of the Ramsay Natural Hydrogen Project situated in South Australia. The venture marks a notable advance, with the detection of hydrogen permeating the entire Parara Limestone section.

Over the weekend, the surface casing was successfully set at 192 meters, and preliminary findings indicate the presence of hydrogen across the complete Parara Limestone section at relatively shallow depths. Wireline logs conducted in the initial 100 meters below the surface casing and the recovery of Modular Formation Dynamics Tester (MDT) samples further substantiate the promising developments.

The MDT samples, along with other preliminary mud gas samples, have been dispatched to a third-party laboratory for comprehensive analysis. Neil McDonald, the Managing Director of Gold Hydrogen, expressed enthusiasm about the MDT results, highlighting the limestone’s favorable porosity and permeability for natural hydrogen production.

“While early days, this result is likely to lead to Australia’s first natural hydrogen discovery,” McDonald remarked.

The hydrogen detection at shallow depths is particularly significant, with initial drilling reaching 700 meters and hydrogen being identified early in the process. The decision to pause drilling at 290 meters to conduct wireline logs yielded four downhole samples showing heightened hydrogen levels.

This development aligns with earlier findings at Ramsay 1 and the historical Ramsay Oil Bore, reinforcing the region’s potential as a natural hydrogen accumulation zone. However, Gold Hydrogen remains cognizant of geological and developmental risks, including challenges associated with hydrogen recovery and the project’s location in environmentally sensitive areas.

Despite these concerns, the global and governmental backing for hydrogen as an alternative energy source provides a positive backdrop for overcoming challenges.
