Svea Vind Offshore, a Swedish energy investor and renewable energy producer, has stated that Ramboll specialists are performing a safety investigation in preparation for the start-up of the Gävle hydrogen project in Sweden in 2023. Green hydrogen is produced, stored, and distributed as part of the enterprise.

Since 2021, Svea Vind Offshore has been working on a commercial hydrogen project in the port of Gävle. The project is now moving on to the next phase, which involves completing safety evaluations as a foundation for detailed design and construction. The facility is expected to be finished next year.

– At Svea Vind Offshore and Ramboll, we believe in the importance of long-term business sustainability. Svea Vind Offshore’s CEO, Mattias Wärn, argues that companies must evolve to stay competitive in today’s market. “We aim to play a catalytic role with our hydrogen and offshore wind projects to enable this transformation,” he adds.

In Sweden, the hydrogen project is being implemented in conjunction with stakeholders in the transportation and industrial sectors. Contracts for the acquisition of hydrogen were negotiated, among others, with Maserfrakt AB, a transportation middleman. Up to 66,660 MWh of green hydrogen is expected to be produced. The energy carrier can promote the decarbonization of processes at nearby industrial plants by covering the fuel demands of 40 vehicles. In comparison to fossil fuels, this amount can assist cut CO2 emissions by up to 20,000 tons per year.

Hydrogen is an excellent complement to renewable energy generation and an essential component of a reformed energy system. The Swedish Energy Agency’s proposed hydrogen plan emphasizes the importance of hydrogen in attaining Sweden’s objective of becoming climate neutral by 2045.
