Siemens and Verano Energy have embarked on a momentous partnership to develop an extraordinary green hydrogen production complex in Chile.
The ambitious project, “Los Amigos del Verano,” backed by a staggering investment of $2.9 billion, is poised to reshape the renewable energy landscape, showcasing a holistic and sustainable approach.
The “Los Amigos del Verano” Complex
Located in Taltal, Antofagasta region, Chile, the green hydrogen project comprises four phases, featuring hydrogen generation plants with a capacity of 2.5 GW each in Phases 1, 2, and 3. Phase 4 elevates the ambition with four 2.5 GW hydrogen generation plants, culminating in a remarkable combined output of 25 GW. The cutting-edge facility plans to transport hydrogen and ammonia via a sophisticated 100 km pipeline to a marine storage and distribution facility along the coast. Additionally, the project will incorporate desalination plants to ensure a sustainable water supply for hydrogen production.
A Green Horizon: Transforming Chile’s Energy Landscape
With construction slated to commence in 2025 and Phase 1 expected to be operational by 2027, “Los Amigos del Verano” promises to be a game-changer in the journey towards NetZero goals. The grand vision of Siemens and Verano Energy aims to lead the charge in providing clean and renewable energy, fostering a greener, cleaner future for Chile and beyond.
The signing ceremony witnessed the visionary leadership of Verano Energy’s CEO, Dylan Rudney, supported by COO Collin Hamilton, CFO Juan Wegner, and Chile Country Manager, Carolina Galleguillos. Siemens’ CEO, Roland Busch, emphasized the significance of digital technology and automation in driving the successful transformation to green hydrogen.
Strategically located in Chile’s Atacama desert, known for its abundant solar and wind resources, the project enjoys the world’s lowest levelized cost of ammonia (LCOA). The “Los Amigos del Verano” complex stands as a testament to Verano Energy’s dedication to achieving NetZero objectives and reducing CO2 emissions through its impressive portfolio of renewable energy and green hydrogen projects.
A Coalition for Sustainability
In a powerful demonstration of their commitment to innovation and sustainability, Siemens joined forces with industry leaders Albemarle and Crasma, reinforcing the shared vision of a greener, more sustainable future.
The Siemens and Verano Energy partnership marks a pivotal milestone in the global pursuit of cleaner, greener energy solutions. With the “Los Amigos del Verano” project, Chile sets an inspiring example for the world, embarking on a transformative journey towards a sustainable energy landscape and combating climate change on a global scale.
