Greenstat and Everfuel have announced that they are aggressively exploring the establishment of a hydrogen hub in Kristiansand, Norway, as part of their collaboration agreement signed in July 2021.
They will collaborate with industry companies Elkem and Glencore Nikkelverk to build a hydrogen production facility in Kristiansand, which will be accompanied by a distribution center aimed at the fast-growing shipping segment, as well as offtake opportunities from partners in construction, trucking mobility, and green energy supplies to industrial clients.
The project partners are working with Elkem to lease property on the Fiskaa industrial estate near the harbors on the coastline. The project will be divided into two phases, the first of which will be a hydrogen production plant with a 20 MW electrolyzer capable of generating roughly 8 MT of green hydrogen per day. The PtX plant will be expanded to a 60 MW electrolyzer in the second phase, which is expected to be completed in 2027.
The proximity of the harbors in Kristiansand, Norway, makes it perfect for supplying marine hydrogen via container swapping and cascade fueling. A collection of ambitious partners have signed intention agreements to offtake hydrogen in Kristiansand, some of whom do not want to be identified at this time. Holland-Norway Lines, FFS Marine, and Arriva Shipping have all signed letters of intent to use the facility’s hydrogen. Kristiansand is appealing to partners in the mobility segments since it is also a logistics center for many enterprises.
Among those who have signed letters of intent to offtake hydrogen from the plant are Asko Agder and Implenia. In addition, Glencore Nikkelverk has signed a letter of intent for the offtake of surplus oxygen from the manufacturing facility. Everfuel and Greenstat will construct a highly energy-efficient PtX plant by combining excess heat from the facility with potential use of excess heat from the facility in partnership with Elkem Carbon.
