Groupe E has inaugurated its green hydrogen production plant adjacent to the Schiffenen dam, marking a remarkable achievement within just a year of its initiation.

Presently undergoing testing and fine-tuning, the facility is poised to provide approximately 300 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, offering a promising avenue for industrial decarbonization and heavy mobility enhancements.

Groupe E has reached a milestone in the energy sector’s evolution with the launch of the Schiffenen hydrogen power plant – a pioneering endeavor in Western Switzerland. Bolstering the hydrogen supply chain, the facility integrates various stages of production in a single site. Powered by an adjoining dam’s turbine, the plant employs water electrolysis to generate hydrogen, subsequently compressing and storing it for regional distribution. This all-encompassing approach, backed by meticulous technology mastery and safety measures, demonstrates Groupe E’s commitment to a low-carbon future.

Following successful equipment commissioning, the Schiffenen plant has entered a meticulous testing phase. Small-scale hydrogen production is underway, fostering a thorough assessment of machinery efficiency, hydrogen quality, and environmental safety. Once the testing phase is complete, the plant will transition to full-scale operation, benefiting from real-time optimization and fine-tuning by Groupe E’s experts. With a projected annual output of 300 tons of green hydrogen, the plant’s potential impact on CO2 emissions reduction is akin to removing approximately 50 logistics trucks from the road.

Investing around CHF 9 million in this groundbreaking initiative, Groupe E underlines its dedication to catalyzing industrial and mobility sector emissions reduction. The plant’s strategic location near major highways amplifies its logistical feasibility. Beyond its immediate contributions, the project aligns with Groupe E’s broader vision of cultivating a sustainable, low-carbon landscape.
