Hazer Group and FortisBC Energy Forge Hydrogen Production Partnership

Hazer Group, in collaboration with FortisBC Energy, is set to revolutionize the hydrogen landscape with the development of a production facility in Canada.

The agreement between Hazer Group Ltd and FortisBC Energy Inc marks a pivotal moment in hydrogen production. The project, to be established in British Columbia, will harness Hazer’s cutting-edge technology to produce up to 2,500 tonnes per annum (tpa) of clean hydrogen, accompanied by approximately 9,500 tpa of Hazer graphite. This venture represents a monumental upscaling effort, dwarfing Hazer’s existing Commercial Demonstration Plant in Western Australia by 25 times.

FortisBC Energy Inc, a leading Canadian energy utility, will spearhead the development of the project, underscoring British Columbia’s commitment to the CleanBC Roadmap. This partnership highlights the synergy between technological innovation and environmental stewardship, positioning Canada as a key player in the global hydrogen economy.

Under the Project Development Agreement (PDA), FortisBC will take full equity ownership and lead project development and operation, while Hazer will serve as the core technology licensor. This streamlined partnership reflects Hazer’s ‘capex lite’ business model, minimizing capital expenditure obligations for the company. Additionally, Hazer will lead engineering activities related to its core technology components, ensuring project success and reliability.

The completion of the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study, facilitated by Wood Plc, marks a significant milestone in project advancement. With key design elements in place, the project is poised for subsequent development phases, with integration targeted for completion alongside definitive commercial agreements by early 2025. This timeline underscores the rapid pace of innovation in the hydrogen sector and the commitment of industry leaders to drive decarbonization efforts forward.
