Hamburger Hafen und Logistik (HHLA), in collaboration with multiple partners, has embarked on a significant venture to evaluate the viability of hydrogen as an energy source for vehicles within the Hamburg port area.

This initiative is part of the broader Clean Port & Logistics Cluster, supported by the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport under the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells.

The cornerstone of this project is the establishment of a pioneering hydrogen refueling station. Located strategically to cater to various vehicles used in port operations—ranging from forklifts to heavy goods vehicles—the station operates on green hydrogen sourced from Lhyfe. This setup underscores HHLA’s commitment to exploring sustainable energy solutions within industrial settings.

Recent weeks have seen intensive testing at the refueling station involving key equipment suppliers such as Hyster-Yale and VWG Oldenburg, alongside the deployment of hydrogen-powered trucks by CMB.TECH. These tests are crucial for assessing operational feasibility and performance under real-world conditions, marking a significant step towards integrating hydrogen technology into daily port activities.

The Clean Port & Logistics Cluster, comprising over 40 companies, serves as a collaborative platform to advance hydrogen applications in port terminals. This initiative not only fosters innovation but also positions Hamburg as a hub for sustainable logistics solutions, aligned with global efforts towards carbon neutrality in industrial sectors.
