A new hydrogen filling station in Heinenoord was formally launched. The station provides green hydrogen to twenty Connexxion buses.

The filling station was established and is being operated as a result of a partnership between the province of South Holland, the municipality of Hoeksche Waard, Connexxion, and Everfuel, the company that built and is operating the station.

Prepared to face the future

The hydrogen filling station has the ability to fuel more than 50 buses. This implies it can accommodate more passengers than the 20 buses that will be arriving soon. The tank pressure at the hydrogen filling station is sufficient for heavier vehicles. Trucks will be allowed to utilize the filling station in the future with this tank pressure. For at least the next 12 years, Everfuel will provide green hydrogen to the filling station. This is the most environmentally friendly kind of hydrogen. In the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark, hydrogen is generated. We’ll show you how hydrogen is made in this animation.

In 2030, public transportation will be zero-emission

‘We ask transporters in our public transportation zones to utilize emission-free buses,’ says Frederik Zevenbergen, deputy traffic and transport. Furthermore, we consider it as our responsibility – in collaboration with partners – to assist in the transition to zero-emission public transportation. We accomplish this by putting in place the appropriate infrastructure, such as this hydrogen filling station for Connexxion buses in Heinenoord. We’ve taken another step toward our objective of zero-emission public transportation by 2030!’

Collaboration on long-term mobility

When it comes to implementing new technology, a collaboration between public and private organizations is critical. ‘At Connexxion, we are particularly pleased with our collaboration on new solutions to address climate change. Connexxion’s regional director, Ben Dwars, adds, “We are very much looking forward to driving the new hydrogen buses starting today.”

‘Heinenoord now possesses one of Europe’s largest hydrogen filling stations,’ says Jacob Krogsgaard, CEO of Everfuel. I’m really excited about the development of this petrol station and working with our creative partners. This, to me, demonstrates that we are in the midst of an energy transition and that green hydrogen is a viable energy carrier that will soon contribute to emission-free transportation.’

The municipality was in charge of issuing permits. ‘Hoeksche Waard intends to be energy neutral by 2040,’ says Alderman Harry van Waveren (mobility). CO2 emissions should be 25 percent lower by 2030 than they were in 2020. The hydrogen filling station helps with this, which is why we were excited to be a part of this initiative. Our citizens now have a greener alternative to driving with hydrogen buses!’

The province of South Holland and hydrogen

We desire clean(er) forms of transportation because we care about the health of visitors, locals, and the environment. A shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy improves transportation while also improving the quality of the living environment. Connexxion’s hydrogen buses are a fantastic illustration of this because they help to improve air quality.

Green hydrogen is an important component of the energy transition. As a result, the province is dedicated to developing hydrogen infrastructure and encouraging the use of hydrogen as a raw material and energy carrier in industry and mobility.
