A new hydrogen refueling station has been inaugurated at Gothenburg’s bustling port.

Positioned near one of Sweden’s busiest truck entry points, this station is strategically placed to cater to heavy traffic and exclusively offers green hydrogen for fueling.

According to Viktor Allgurén, Head of Innovation at the Port of Gothenburg, the station’s location is optimal due to the significant truck traffic and the need for refueling work machinery. This setup, alongside existing electric charging stations, supports the port’s transition to sustainable heavy land transport. Located near Gate 6, it is adjacent to the Gothenburg RoRo Terminal, on a road with 400,000 heavy vehicles annually. Truck traffic is expected to rise as Stena Line moves its terminals to Arendal, thereby increasing vehicle numbers in the area.

Hydri, the operator of the station, aims to establish a hydrogen infrastructure in Sweden with plans for about 20 stations in 2024 and 2025. This initial station has partial funding from the Swedish Energy Agency. Michel Thomas, CEO of Qarlbo Energy and Chairman of Hydri, states that green hydrogen is key to transitioning the heavy transport sector towards carbon neutrality.

The refueling station at Gate 6 of the Port of Gothenburg opened on October 4. It has the capacity to handle around 1,500 kg of hydrogen per day, enough to service approximately 35 trucks daily, marking a significant step in Sweden’s move towards sustainable transport solutions.
