Deutsche Telekom is spearheading a new era in mobile communications at the Nibirii Festival in Düren. With a focus on sustainability and efficiency, the festival serves as a testing ground for novel mobile communications advancements that are set to reshape the way we connect, communicate, and power our devices.

A star of the event is the new mobile transmission mast that marks a departure from the conventional. Unlike its bulkier predecessors, this innovative mast is smaller, lighter, and impressively flexible. Easily transportable and swiftly deployable by a single person within just 20 minutes, this mast brings 5G and LTE connectivity to any location swiftly. This advancement is set to redefine mobile communications during large-scale events and in disaster-stricken areas where quick network setup is crucial.

Abdu Mudesir, Chief Technology Officer at Telekom Deutschland, highlights the mast’s game-changing nature, stating, “At this festival, we are using a new innovative way of mobile phone coverage. This mast was developed by two of our employees themselves. It is now going live in Düren. In this way, we give festival visitors the opportunity to use the best network at any time to share the special moments with others.”

Deutsche Telekom is taking a green stride by integrating hydrogen fuel cells as a power source for temporary mobile communications coverage. This marks the first-ever deployment of a hydrogen fuel cell to replace a diesel generator, typically consuming around 35 to 40 liters of diesel per day. The hydrogen fuel cell, supplied by Munich-based company SFC Energy AG, harnesses CO2-neutral hydrogen produced from water. This marks the debut of a mobile base station being powered by 100 percent green hydrogen from a fuel cell in a live operation, indicating the industry’s determination to embrace eco-friendly alternatives.

The fuel cell’s capacity ensures continuous energy supply to the largest mobile mast installed for the festival, catering to the needs of approximately 30,000 festival-goers. Running for 28 consecutive days, the fuel cell remains operational until the festival’s conclusion, affirming its viability as a green power solution for various scenarios.

In another pioneering move, Deutsche Telekom introduces small cells into the equation. This technology amplifies signals selectively, enhancing mobile connectivity and bringing an enriched experience for users, particularly those at the front row of the stage. This marks a strategic shift towards enhancing the festival experience and ensuring seamless connectivity during high-demand scenarios.
