Fraunhofer Institute is shedding light on the potential acoustic transformation brought about by hydrogen-powered heavy goods vehicles. While the comprehensive results are anticipated in spring 2024, early findings already indicate that 18-tonne trucks equipped with the Keyou hydrogen engine exhibit noise levels only half as loud as their diesel counterparts during low-speed operations and maneuvers.

Hydrogen combustion engines, often lauded for their role in decarbonizing “last mile” logistics, now present a promising solution to the challenge of noise pollution in urban centers. With minimal nitrogen oxide emissions and a complete absence of CO2 release, hydrogen engines are positioned as key players in sustainable urban logistics, particularly crucial considering the dense residential concentrations in city centers.

While hydrogen fuel cells have been recognized for their environmental benefits, their contribution to noise reduction is gaining attention. The Fraunhofer Institute embarked on this study to address the dearth of market overview and standardized data on noise emissions from commercial vehicles with alternative drives in logistics, particularly in Germany. As regulations on noise emissions evolve, similar to the PIEK certification in the Netherlands, the study aims to shape the future of noise control in urban logistics.

Early revelations from the study, especially those communicated by Keyou, highlight the significant noise reduction achieved by hydrogen-powered trucks. With noise levels registering only half that of their diesel counterparts, hydrogen engines emerge as potential contributors to a quieter and more pleasant urban acoustic environment. The study’s potential impact extends to shaping regulations and fostering the adoption of quieter technologies for urban logistics.
