With the recent inauguration of HyIron’s Oshivela plant, Namibia has taken a significant step toward embracing sustainable industrial practices. Recently, the facility started green hydrogen production, contributing to the green iron industry’s quest to eliminate carbon emissions from iron manufacturing processes.
At the heart of this transition is HyIron’s 12 MW electrolyzer, recognized as the largest in Southern Africa. Operating within a sophisticated smart microgrid, this electrolytic unit is pivotal in producing stable, green hydrogen. The initiative underscores HyIron’s broader objective of carbon-neutral iron production, aiming to drastically reduce the sector’s carbon footprint.
The Namibian government’s proactive stance on green hydrogen has been a cornerstone of the project’s success. In conjunction with the strategic backing of over 60 local small and medium-sized enterprises, the project leveraged local expertise and resources critical to constructing this advanced facility. This synergy underscores an effective public-private partnership model that has been instrumental in overcoming environmental challenges.
The Oshivela project has benefited significantly from a global confluence of expertise. Notably, Peric Hydrogen Systems played a crucial role in providing technical know-how essential for system implementation. Industry veterans, like Tony and Ma, have also been acknowledged for their contributions in steering the project towards fruition.
From groundbreaking to operational status, the plant’s rapid development—spanning less than a year since its inception in April 2024—reflects the efficiency of international and local collaborations. Institutions like the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action have been pivotal, lending not only financial support but also demonstrating international commitment to energy transitions.
