Hyster Company tests an HFC-powered container handler at Fenix Marine Services in the Port of Los Angeles.

The Hyster H1050-1150XD-CH top-pick container handler is powered by two 45kw hydrogen fuel cells from Hyster-Yale Group subsidiary Nuvera. A 2018 California Climate Investments grant helped build the HFC-powered container handling.

The HFC-powered top pick provides the zero emissions of a battery electric option with enough capacity to keep operators going and prevent the need to refuel or recharge mid-shift. Refueling the top pick with hydrogen filling should take 15 minutes and deliver eight to 10 hours of continuous operating time while producing only water and heat. Hydrogen fuel cell and onboard lithium-ion battery power equipment or charge battery. The top pick is also equipped with a revolutionary Hyster® energy recovery technology for electric container handlers.

The Fenix Marine Services (FMS) container terminal, acquired by CMA CGM Group in 2021, uses on-site compressed hydrogen to fuel the top pick.

Hyster’s line of smaller, lighter-capacity powered industrial vehicles is used to electrify higher-capacity equipment for port facilities. The company recently launched lithium-ion powered forklifts with load capacities up to 36,000 pounds and previously announced a pilot of a fuel-cell powered ReachStacker at the Port of Valencia, a fuel cell-powered empty container handler in Hamburg, Germany, and a joint partnership to develop electric and hydrogen powered terminal tractors.

This project is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide initiative that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, strengthens the economy, improves public health and the environment, and benefits low-income communities and households.
