The Indian government’s push for green hydrogen is gaining momentum, with significant investments anticipated at key ports. V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tamil Nadu and Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat, are set to become focal points for green hydrogen hubs, marking a pivotal shift towards sustainable energy.
During a mid-term review led by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the progress of initiatives such as green ports, shipping, and parks. The hydrogen park project at Kandla port in Gujarat took center stage, with the Deendayal Port Authority actively developing green hydrogen hubs. Thirteen global developers have shown interest through an Expression of Interest, offering over 7 MMTPA capacity for green ammonia production. Statkraft, Europe’s renewable energy giant, has signed an MoU for green hydrogen production at the port.
Simultaneously, V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tamil Nadu is dedicating 500 acres for a green hydrogen hub, solidifying plans with NTPC Green Energy Ltd for a Green Hydrogen/Derivative Production Facility.
These strides align with the commitments made at the Global Maritime India Summit, where green initiatives secured MoUs worth Rs. 3.8 lakh crores, underlining a substantial dedication to eco-friendly projects in the maritime sector. The ambitious Indian ports’ endeavors signify a crucial leap towards a sustainable and hydrogen-powered future.
