Indonesia Embraces Green Hydrogen for Maritime Decarbonization

Indonesia’s state electricity entity, PT PLN (Persero), has formalized a joint study agreement with key stakeholders including the Ministry of Transportation and PT HDF Energy Indonesia.

The agreement sets the stage for exploring green hydrogen as a viable marine fuel, aligning with Indonesia’s commitment to its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

Statistics reveal that the maritime sector significantly contributes to global carbon emissions—a situation Indonesia aims to rectify in adherence to its climate commitments. According to Hendri Ginting, Director of Shipping and Maritime Affairs, the Ministry of Transportation is spearheading efforts to transition conventional vessels to hybrid hydrogen-battery configurations. This move, Ginting asserts, is a testament to Indonesia’s dedication to achieving low-emission maritime transport.

The initiative complements Indonesia’s broader national agenda towards energy autonomy and aims to attain Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060, as outlined in President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita vision. PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo emphasizes the strategic necessity of integrating domestically-sourced clean energy in maritime operations to reduce carbon footprints.

The joint study is initially targeting Eastern Indonesia, a region abundant in renewable resources and strategically significant for ASDP-managed routes. PLN’s Director of Corporate Planning, Hartanto Wibowo, highlights this focus area for its potential in advancing hydrogen-based solutions as part of Indonesia’s dynamic energy transition. In alignment with the successful proliferation of the electric vehicles ecosystem, PLN anticipates bolstering hydrogen-based mobility as an adjunct to battery-based alternatives.

Notably, PLN’s production of 203 tons of green hydrogen through 22 Green Hydrogen Plants illustrates its capability and commitment to fostering a robust hydrogen ecosystem. On the hydrogen frontier, PT HDF Energy Indonesia, represented by Railway Geze, stands poised to contribute via fuel cell technologies that leverage green hydrogen, thereby promoting maritime decarbonization.
